FREDERICK SIMPSON COBURN (1871-1960)

WINTER IN THE LAURENTIANS

OIL ON CANVAS

1934

H 18", W 24"

Coburn's winter scenes of Canada rank among the best-loved. He is well-known for scenes of bright, snow-laden winter landscapes with horses or oxen-drawn sleighs of logs lumbering through the wintry countryside of the Laurentians or the Eastern Townships. Many, like this fine work, are of people bundled up against the cold. Coburn masterfully shows the effect of light and shadows on the roads and snowbanks as well as the crisp, frosty atmosphere of the scene.
Signed "F.S. Coburn" and dated lower left. Inscribed "Winter in the Laurentians" on verso stretcher bar. Wood frame H 24", W 30". Member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Artists.
